Spring Cleaning

spring clean your lifeSpring is in the air and thank goodness for that! It’s time for Spring cleaning!!  While I can’t really complain compared to my Midwestern and northeastern friends, there is something about new leaves, new blooms, and a new year that always make me want to clean house.

Open the windows, air out the stale and stuffy air, bask in the sunshine and let the cool breeze lift your spirits and your mind. Who says the New Year has to be the only time of year you can make resolutions to change? I think spring time is even better. It’s the perfect time of year to make some changes.

Here are a few tips to kick start your fresh start:

  1. Clean out your closet of any clothes that don’t fit. And by closet, I mean life. And by clothes, I mean relationships, jobs, habits, and mindsets—anything that doesn’t fit the life you want to have—GET RID OF IT. Clutter only collects dust and crowds out the good stuff. Don’t just put those things on a shelf, toss them out, and feel the weight quickly lift off your shoulders and out of your life. And if you’re a visual person like me, then ACTUALLY cleaning out your closet might help to jumpstart your fresh new mindset.
  1. Get organized. While a trip to The Container Store is never a bad idea, I’m speaking in a more proverbial way. After you’ve cleaned out the things in your life that once sucked you of time, energy, money, and most importantly, joy; NOW is the time to organize what you have left, into priorities, abilities, and capabilities. It’s an inventory of sorts that helps you discover what you’ve had all along. If you’re the visual type, make a vision board or a chart outlining the best parts of you, then capitalize on them.  Write them with dry erase marker on your bathroom mirror so every morning, you are reminded of how freaking FANTASTIC you are!!
  1. Set goals, appointments and even a mission statement. These aren’t New Year’s resolutions. These are “what-am-I-doing-to-make-sure-I-can-be-the-best-me” resolutions. For starters, now that the slate is clear and you have an organized workspace, create a mission statement for yourself. It’s a thesis statement, if you will, that you can keep coming back to anytime you need to re-focus or re-evaluate. Setting goals takes your action items into measurable steps, and making appointments forces you to follow through with them.  Goals become reality when you put a deadline to them – be accountable to you.  You deserve it!!
  1. Keep clutter out! How many times have you watched the television show Hoarders, seen a person have their home and life completely changed by the big purge, only to have a follow-up visit six months later with a house overrun by clutter again? It’s frustrating to watch, isn’t it? The crux of it is that no one intends to let it get that way. Clutter comes into your life little by little and that is why it is so important to not let it in the first place. Make a point to evaluate new opportunities and relationships in how they align with your mission statement and what you ultimately want out of life. If it doesn’t fit in, don’t let it in.

Here’s the kicker: You’ve already got your best self.  It’s not something you have to go out and buy. It’s something you have to find and the best way to do that is to start cleaning. Sift through all the dusty clutter you no longer need and toss them out the window. Then let the cool breeze come in and remind you how amazing you and only you can be!!  Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home, make it happen in your life and not only will the dust and clutter be gone, you will be filled with joy and happiness that is sustainable and contagious!!  Let your light shine!!
